January 14, 2016
On 12th of January, we made a visit to a New York based design studio located in lower Manhattan called ‘Second Story‘. As per their website, Second Story aims to “redefine the world of interactive storytelling”. Looking at their works, it seemed that they were making significant progress.
Upon reaching the studio, we were welcomed by an artwork consisting of projections upon semi-spinning pieces of flat wooden blocks that made squeaking nosies when rotated. The artwork consisted their name ‘Second Story’. It was one of the most creative method of showcasing a company’s banner name that I had ever seen, which was really captivating. I regret for not taking a photo of it now.
We were then led to a room, which Second Story happened to use for prototyping most of the artworks they created. But before reaching the room, I saw something remarkable again. It was a pendant light enclosed by thin wooden planks bent to form a spherical shape. Luckily, I was able to find something in Google that resembled exactly what I saw that day. It was a marvellous piece of artwork, simple yet beautiful.

Then we were showcased several videos that outlined several projects that Second Story had worked upon in the past. They were really beautiful. The notion of creating beautiful artworks that are integrated with modern technology really intrigued me. Although I have always dreamed myself being a web developer either working on my own startup or for somebody else (like Facebook or Google), I have come to realise that deep down in my heart, there is a place not only for programming codes, but also for art and design.
You can view most of the projects by clicking this link, but I particularly liked this one. You can know more about it from here.
